As he lay back on the sofa he pushed aside sodden tissues and closed his laptop, feeling a mixture of satisfaction and shame.

Alone in the semi-darkness, trying to rebuild some sense of self-respect, he said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that they both could have fit on that door.”
